As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, the South East Development Commission (SEDC) has called on Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora to renew their commitment to national unity and support ongoing efforts to accelerate development across the South East.
The call was made by the Executive Director, Corporate Services of the Commission, Dr. Sylvester Okonkwo, in an Independence Day message marking the anniversary.
Okonkwo said the occasion provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, renew their hope in the nation and strengthen their commitment to building a more prosperous and united Nigeria.
He said the South East Vision 2050 remains a major framework guiding the Commission’s efforts to transform the region into a competitive, prosperous and inclusive economic hub, stressing the need to move from expectations to practical action.
According to him, the Commission has continued to put in place the necessary institutional structures, strategic plans and policies to drive regional development, with focus areas including infrastructure, agriculture and agro-industrial development, trade and investment, industrial growth, human capital development, youth empowerment and digital transformation.
He also highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement, as well as initiatives such as the South East Venture Capital and South East Investment Corporation, in creating opportunities for investment, enterprise development and economic growth in the region.
Okonkwo therefore urged Ndigbo to support the Commission, collaborate with relevant stakeholders, invest in the region and contribute to the collective effort to build a stronger and more prosperous South East.
He expressed optimism that with sustained collaboration and commitment, the region would record greater progress and deliver meaningful opportunities for its people.
