The Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District has called for immediate federal intervention to address worsening erosion and the deplorable state of key federal roads in the zone, warning that continued neglect could trigger a major transportation and humanitarian crisis.
Speaking with journalists after plenary, the lawmaker said his first motion on the Senate floor was driven by the scale of erosion devastation in Anambra South, describing the area as one of Nigeria’s worst-hit zones. He cited the erosion site along the Onitsha–Owerri Road at Okwudija, where one lane of the dual carriageway has collapsed, noting that the road is a strategic national corridor linking several South-East and South-South states.
He also raised concerns over the Onitsha–Nnewi–Amichi–Ogbunike federal road, which he said has remained largely unfinished since 2003 despite its economic importance, while the collapse of an ageing metal bridge has cut off communities, disrupted trade, and limited access to healthcare and education.
The Senator expressed confidence following the Senate’s directive to the Committee on Works to urgently intervene, disclosing that an on-the-spot inspection of the affected roads has been scheduled within the next two weeks.
On the closure of the Onitsha Main Market, the lawmaker urged calm and understanding, acknowledging the historical significance of May 30 in Igboland but warning that prolonged sit-at-home disruptions have severely damaged the South-East economy.
He commended Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, for restoring security and economic confidence through decisive leadership, including the establishment of the Agụnechemba Security Network and extensive road infrastructure development. The Senator expressed full support for the governor’s resolve to end sit-at-home practices, describing it as necessary to protect livelihoods and secure long-term prosperity.
He appealed to traders and residents to cooperate with authorities, stressing that peace, security and unity remain essential for economic recovery and sustainable development in Anambra State.
