The remains of veteran journalist and elder statesman, Chief Dan Agbese, were on Friday laid to rest in his hometown, Apa-Agila, in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, amid heartfelt tributes from dignitaries, family members, and admirers.

Speaking at the funeral, the Benue State Deputy Governor, Sam Ode, described the late Agbese as a distinguished son of the state whose commitment to truth and professionalism left an enduring mark on Nigerian journalism. He noted that Agbese’s legacy would continue to inspire generations, announcing that the Benue Printing and Publishing House has been renamed in his honour.

Also paying tribute, Benue South senatorial aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Olofu, described Agbese’s passing as a monumental loss to Ado, Benue State, and Nigeria at large. Represented by ADC chieftain Chief Patrick Ogbu, Olofu praised the late journalist as a man of courage, integrity, and deep passion for the pen profession, whose life was defined by service to humanity.

In a deeply emotional tribute, Member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, Philip Agbese, who is also a nephew to the deceased, said the legacy of Chief Dan Agbese is so vast that it could fill volumes that one may not finish reading in a year. He highlighted the enduring values of truth, integrity, humility, and generosity within the Agbese family, noting that the late elder amplified these virtues and would be greatly missed.

The funeral service, held at Saint Rose Venerini Catholic Church, Apa-Agila, drew a large crowd, with the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Most Reverend Michael Apochi, urging the faithful to uphold truth and righteousness.

Chief Dan Agbese, a former Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine and General Manager of Radio Benue, is remembered as a trailblazer whose contributions elevated journalism in Nigeria and inspired countless professionals across the country.
