The summit shall encompass all levels of government and Nigerians, which shall include delegates from the federal, states and local governments as well as the traditional institutions to propose legitimate solutions to insecurity and its challenges in the country.
Indeed, the upper legislative chamber urged the federal government to rejig the country’s security policies based on the outcome of the summit.
The Senate also resolved that each senator would organize security summit in their senatorial zone.This is sequel to a motion of urgent need for a national security summit sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South).
The lawmaker drew inference from the high level of global insecurity which is rising due to the events in Russia and Ukraine and the increasing problems created by the global north and responses from the global south, which include enhancing food insecurity and addressing sustainable development goals (SDGS) deficits.
The motion was co-sponsored by Senator Titus Tartenger (Benue North-West), Senator Peter Nwebonyi (Ebonyi North) and Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West).
Senator Ibrahim emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is serious about the peace in Nigeria, stressing that there is need for some fact-finding intelligence support for the president’s efforts, adding that most of the military strategies and languages such as alpha, bravo, charlie, Delta, echo, foxtrot, golf, hotel, India, Juliet, kilo, Lima, Mike and others are no longer exclusive to the military.
According to Jimoh, “no country will allow it’s citizens to understand security by living with insecurity, therefore, the ideology of peace for all, as outlined in the executive policies of the Renewed Hope Agenda should be upheld and promoted”.
He added that “it is imperative that empirical fact-finding National Security Summit is organized by the Senate to assist in providing the requisite platform for exhaustive and far-reaching deliberations on the way forward”.
During the plenary session on Tuesday, the lawmakers debated the merits of convening another security summit, noting that previous assemblies had produced summits with less impact.
Senators who supported the motion argued that fresh engagements that would bring together a wider cross‑section of stakeholders could yield new ideas, forge a unified national security framework, and equip the military with updated strategies.
Meanwhile, Opposing lawmakers, however, cautioned that past summits had failed to translate recommendations into action.
At the end, the motion scaled through, with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, directing preparations immediately.
