Dr David Olofu on Friday publicly committed to serving a maximum of two terms in the Senate if elected in 2027, as policy experts and stakeholders urged him to adopt a more focused development framework for Benue South Senatorial District.
The commitment was made at the Benue South Interactive Session held at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess and Suites, Asokoro, Abuja, where Olofu unveiled his 12-point legislative agenda before political leaders, professionals, and community stakeholders.
Speaking at the session, Dr Odatse-Peters Kelvin, Director of Risk Management at the Benue Rebirth Movement (BRM), commended Olofu for openly presenting his agenda, describing it as a break from the status quo and a signal of inclusive governance.
However, Odatse-Peters cautioned that the public unveiling of the agenda had set clear benchmarks against which Olofu’s performance would be judged if elected.
Appraising the document as a Development and Energy Economist, he advised Olofu to consolidate the 12-point agenda into a five-pillar development framework capable of driving a 20-year socio-economic growth plan for Benue South.
The proposed pillars include agricultural development; entrepreneurship and human capital development; ICT-driven human capital development; youth and sports development; and an inclusive governance structure to ensure broad-based participation and accountability.
In a pointed intervention, Odatse-Peters challenged Olofu to publicly state how many terms he would seek in the Senate and to clarify his position on the proposed creation of Apa State, should the legislation remain unresolved before 2027.
Responding, Olofu declared that he would serve only two terms—eight years in total—to allow for rotational representation in favour of the Oju/Obi Federal Constituency.
On the agitation for Apa State, the senatorial aspirant reaffirmed his support, stating that he believed in the cause and would deploy his legislative privileges to advance the bill if elected.
